Here’s our top tips for how you and your family can get the most out of your visit to Dedham Vale
Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley will forever be associated with the works of world-renowned artists such as Constable, Nash, Gainsborough and Sir Alfred Munnings. They were all known for their breathtaking landscape paintings inspired by this area.
The best way to see Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley is on foot. There are many trails ranging from short, family-friendly walks to more challenging full-day and longer hikes. One of the best-known is the Box Valley Walk, which takes you through nine miles of tranquil, unspoilt countryside. See a 15th-century hilltop church once painted by Constable, the remains of Tendring Hall, a once-great country estate, the charming village of Polstead and the eye-catching timber-framed houses of Boxford.
The gently undulating terrain of the Dedham Vale is particularly well-suited to relaxed cycling. Country roads here are low on traffic and high on points of interest where you’ll want to pull over for a look-around. A well-known route is the Painter’s Trail, which at 70 miles can be broken up into easier one-day sections.
Give the kids a treat with a few hours at this wonderful park. You’ll find plenty of woodland paths to wander, space to build dens, picnic spots and chances to let the dog off the leash for a while. Just half an hour’s drive from Elm Farm, High Woods also has several children’s play areas.
