Renowned for its English Channel seaside resorts, Sussex lays claim to some truly exceptional beaches, many of which lie in the area’s eastern expanses. From remote, wild and unspoilt stretches of shoreline to family-friendly havens there’s a beach here for every preference. It’s also said to be the sunniest place in mainland Britain.
Camber Sands sits to the east of the ancient town of Rye and is renowned for its low tides, sandy shores and picturesque windswept sand dunes. Due to its wind conditions, the waters off this coastline are popular with watersports enthusiasts who come here to enjoy windsurfing, kite boarding and other invigorating activities. (Distance from park: 14.9 miles)
Backed by grand whitewashed Edwardian hotels and a two-layered promenade, Hastings Beach is one of the most south-easterly beaches in England. Like many of the region’s beaches, it is predominantly shingle. There is, however, a good expanse of sand as the tide goes out – ideal for beach games and building sandcastles – as well as a grand Victorian pier. (Distance from park: 3.3 miles)
St Leonards Beach lies to the west of Hastings and is a popular shingle beach backed by a double decker promenade. There are plenty of facilities and amenities nearby including some beautiful parks and gardens located along the seafront. (Distance from park: 5 miles)
Gently nestled five miles northeast of Eastbourne, Pevensey Bay is an old fishing village that attracts a large number of tourists each year. It boasts a rural shingle beach and is said to have been the landing place for William the Conqueror. Local shops and facilities are available within a 100-metre walk from the beach. (Distance from park: 13.8 miles)
Featuring a long stretch of shingle divided up by wooden groynes, Cooden Beach near the town of Bexhill is popular with kite surfers, windsurfers and jetskiers, who flock here at all times of the year. Getting to Cooden Beach couldn't be easier as there is a train station practically on the beach, and for those arriving by car, there’s free parking on the beach front. (Distance from park: 9.6 miles)
